Southern Company Data Breach Notice

Southern Company posted a public notice titled Information Regarding a Recent Incident Involving Customer Information. It is issued under the Alabama Power name and says affected accounts span Georgia Power, Alabama Power and Mississippi Power. You can read the web notice (PDF) in full. The notice does not state a date.

What the notice says:

  • What happened: Ongoing monitoring found that an unauthorized third party accessed information about utility accounts for a limited group of customers.
  • What the company did: It notified law enforcement, started an investigation, monitors its systems around the clock and says it found no evidence of ongoing unauthorized access.
  • How you are told: Affected customers are notified directly by U.S. mail and email.
  • Free protection: One year of credit monitoring through Equifax. Enrollment instructions are in your letter or email.
  • Help line: 1-800-900-6021, Monday to Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central Time.

Tip: The notice says the company will never threaten immediate disconnection or demand payment over the phone. Verify any call or message using the number on your bill.
