CaseIn re: American Medical Collection Agency, Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, No. 19-md-2904, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey

What the AMCA Data Breach Settlement Is About

AMCA was a billing and collections company that labs and medical providers used to collect unpaid bills. Its systems were breached from about August 1, 2018 to March 30, 2019, and HIPAA Journal reports that the protected health information of more than 25 million people across many AMCA clients was involved. The plaintiffs say the information could include names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, payment card and bank details and medical provider information.

The lawsuits were combined in federal court in New Jersey. This settlement resolves the claims against Sonic Healthcare U.S.A. and the labs it is tied to. It is separate from the larger Labcorp AMCA settlement, whose claim deadline was September 3, 2026. To learn how these cases work, read what a class action lawsuit is.

Who Qualifies

You qualify if Clinical Pathology Laboratories, or AMCA on its behalf, or Austin Pathology Associates, or AMCA on its behalf, sent you notice that your information was or may have been involved in the AMCA incident. Using a Sonic lab is not enough on its own. You must have received the notice. The defendants, their officers and directors, the assigned judges and anyone convicted of causing the incident are excluded. Your notice includes the Class Member ID you need to file online.

How Much Will You Get?

You can choose one cash option, and you can add monitoring to either one. The cash amounts are not guaranteed, because they are reduced or increased depending on how many people file valid claims and on what remains after fees, service awards and administration costs. See how class action payouts are calculated.

  • Alternative cash payment: an estimated $50 with no receipts, but you sign a statement under penalty of perjury
  • Documented losses: up to $5,000 for unreimbursed losses traceable to the incident, such as identity theft or medical fraud costs, plus up to 10 hours of documented time at $25 per hour
  • Medical data monitoring: up to 2 years of CyEx Medical Shield Pro, which you must select on the claim form

Class counsel plans to ask for up to 34 percent of the fund, about $2.19 million, and $5,000 service awards for each class representative. Both come out of the fund and need court approval.

How to File an AMCA Settlement Claim

  1. Find your notice and your Class Member ID.
  2. Go directly to AMCADataBreachSettlement.com. Do not use links in unexpected texts or emails.
  3. Choose the $50 payment or the documented loss option, and select the monitoring box if you want it.
  4. For documented losses, upload receipts or records and sign the attestation.
  5. Submit by January 4, 2027 and save your confirmation.

You can also mail a paper claim form to Attn: Claims, c/o Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, P.O. Box 5324, New York, NY 10150-5324, postmarked by the same date. Electronic payment is available only for online claims. Filing is free. See how to claim settlement money and what to do when you get a class action notice. For help, call (833) 453-3715.

Do You Need Proof?

Not for the $50 payment, but you must sign an attestation. For documented losses you need receipts or other records, and handwritten notes you made yourself are not enough alone. All claims are subject to verification.

Opting Out or Objecting

The deadline to opt out or object is December 3, 2026. Opt outs and objections must be mailed to the administrator, and the notice says they must be postmarked by that date. Opting out keeps your right to sue separately but means no payment from this settlement. If you stay in, you give up the right to sue the settling defendants over the AMCA breach.

When Will Payments Be Made?

The final approval hearing is set for January 7, 2027, and the court can change the date. The claim deadline falls three days before the hearing. Payments follow final approval and the end of any appeals, and no payment date has been announced.

Watch for Scams

Use only the official website and your mailed notice. Never pay to file a claim, and never share your full Social Security number or bank login. Report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and read our guide to class action settlement scams.

Is the Payment Taxable?

Settlement payments can be taxable depending on what they replace. See is settlement money taxable and ask a tax professional about your situation.
