What the case is about
Per the official settlement site, this case concerns a targeted cyberattack on Carter Credit Union’s computer systems in June 2025. Certain files containing private information were accessed, and the exposed data varies by individual but may include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license and government-issued ID numbers, financial account and card information, medical and health insurance information, and dates of birth.
That is an unusually broad exposure for a credit union breach, since it spans both financial and medical categories.
Carter Credit Union denies that it did anything wrong, and the court has not decided who is right. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost, risk, disruption and uncertainty of continuing the litigation. This is a state court case, filed in the 1st Judicial District Court for Caddo Parish, Louisiana, rather than a federal case, which is why it is proceeding under Louisiana state civil procedure rather than the federal rules that govern most of the settlements on this site.
Who qualifies
The official site defines Class Members as individuals identified by Carter Credit Union’s records who are entitled to benefits under the settlement. Many will already have received a notice directly from Carter Credit Union.
If you banked with Carter Credit Union, also known as Carter Federal Credit Union, in Louisiana, Fort Worth, Texas, or Magnolia, Arkansas, and are unsure whether you were affected, contact the settlement administrator directly rather than assuming either way.
What you can claim
The $50 no-proof cash payment
A flat cash payment requiring no documentation at all. This is the option most people should take if they did not incur measurable costs from the breach.
Reimbursement of documented losses, up to $2,500
For losses that occurred between 25 June 2025 and 19 November 2026 and are fairly traceable to the data incident. Reporting on the settlement terms describes covered categories including identity theft or fraud losses, fees for credit reports, credit monitoring, or freezing and unfreezing credit, costs to replace identification documents, and postage for contacting financial institutions.
To claim this tier, you generally need supporting documentation such as receipts, bank or credit card statements, or other evidence connecting your loss to the breach.
You choose one cash option or the other, not both. If you have not incurred documented costs, the $50 flat payment is the simpler and faster route. If you have real receipts tied to the breach, it is worth the extra few minutes, since $2,500 is fifty times the no-proof amount.
Three years of credit monitoring, either way
All class members are eligible to enroll in CyEx Financial Shield Complete, which includes $1 million in financial fraud insurance and monitoring for fraud, identity theft, unauthorized transactions and high-risk activity. This benefit is available regardless of which cash option you choose, and given that Social Security numbers and medical information were reportedly involved, it is worth activating even if you take the simpler $50 payment.
How to file
You need the Login ID and PIN from your settlement notice to file online.
- Go to the official claim form on ccudatasettlement.com
- Choose the $50 flat payment, or reimbursement of documented losses with supporting evidence attached
- Submit online, or download the claim form PDF and mail or email it to the administrator
- Submit by 19 November 2026, online or postmarked if mailed
If you lost your notice and cannot find your Login ID and PIN, email info@CCUDataSettlement.com or call (866) 675-2433 well before the deadline rather than in November. Our guide to how to claim settlement money covers the general mistakes that void claims.
The two-deadline trap
This settlement has the same structure as several others covered on this site, and it catches people out the same way every time.
20 October 2026 is the last day to opt out or object.
19 November 2026 is the last day to file a claim.
If you want to preserve your right to sue Carter Credit Union separately, that decision closes a full month before the claim deadline. If you simply want a payment, you have until 19 November.
What happens if you do nothing
The official site is explicit. Unless you opt out, you are automatically part of the settlement. Doing nothing means you receive no benefits or payment, and you give up the right to sue, continue to sue, or be part of another lawsuit against Carter Credit Union over the claims this settlement resolves.
The release binds you either way, so filing is the only way to get something for it. See our guide to what to do if you receive a class action notice for why this is the case in most settlements.
When will payments be made?
No date has been announced. The final approval hearing is 30 November 2026 at 9:30 a.m., and the official site states plainly that the court still has to decide whether to grant final approval. Payments follow only after approval and the resolution of any appeal.
Reporting on the settlement terms indicates Carter Credit Union will pay up to $400,000 in attorneys’ fees and litigation costs, plus $2,000 service awards for each of nine named class representatives, subject to court approval.
Carter Credit Union settlement scams
A breach involving Social Security numbers and medical information, paired with a $50 no-proof option, is a strong fraud target.
- Any site other than ccudatasettlement.com
- Any fee to file. Filing is free
- Any request for your full Social Security number outside the official claim form
- Unsolicited calls or texts claiming your payment is ready

Is the payment taxable?
It depends which option you choose. Documented loss reimbursement restores money you actually spent, which generally points away from taxable income. The flat $50 payment is paid without proof of loss, closer to statutory damages and more likely taxable, though at this amount the question is largely academic for most people.

What to do now
File before 19 November 2026. The $50 option takes minutes.
Find your Login ID and PIN, or contact the administrator now if you cannot.
Activate the three years of credit monitoring whichever cash option you choose.
Consider a credit freeze independently of this settlement, given the range of data reportedly exposed.
